Bye CN!
My friend CN is moving to Fort Wayne to take a fabulous new job as organist at a big Presbyterian church there. He has rented a condo and will be making a living wage as a church musician.
He is a success story for me!
He is also the reason why no one can tell me that “there are no good young organists anymore.” This man is amazing! He plays phenomenally, improvises intuitively and creatively and most importantly sees his job as enabling the people to sing not a star performer.
I’m going to miss him tremendously.
There was a going away party last night, hosted by a friend of his from one of his former church choirs. Smart, talented, silly people who love him dearly came to say goodbye. I left at 11:00. Not the first, but I could see the trend. C was weeping and so was everyone that was leaving.
Why does it hurt so much sometimes to close the chapter and open the next one? It’s not like he’s dying or moving to Guam. It’s only Fort Wayne for heaven’s sake! A 9 1/2 hour drive! or a short plane ride.
I suppose the crying is because we know we won’t make that trip as often as we want to and we fear that the emails and phone calls will drop off eventually. And because email, phone calls and visits just are not the same as hanging out, driving to Northfield for class, helping each other with projects and generally living in community with each other.
Love you, C. God bless you in your new adventure!
