Would X actually take the children?

I was late leaving work this afternoon because TB came in and needed to talk about having to put her mother in a nursing home.

Phoned home from the road (I know! I shouldn’t be driving and talking on the phone at the same time!). No answer. No answer for the 25 minutes it took to get from church to the school. DS1 said he was coming straight home today. Why wasn’t he answering?

I was 3 minutes late to DS2’s school. He wasn’t standing there so I drove home by the route I thought he took. Couldn’t find him.

Went in the house. No boys. Let the dog out. Voice mail that DS1 is staying after school (thank goodness! but next time call my cell, ok?)

Tried X’s cell phone. Straight to voicemail which means he didn’t have it on.

It actually crossed my mind that he had taken them.

Asked the neighbor who was out raking his leaves if he had seen DS2. Nope. If he comes down the hill would you tell him I’m out looking for him? Sure.

Drove back to the school. Drove all around the school. Called in to the office. Did DS2 have to stay after for something? She did an ‘all call’ for him. No response. Saw the Social Studies teacher coming out of the building. Do you know if DS2 stayed after school. Nope. Didn’t see him.

Still no answer at home or on the cell phone. Damn!

Called SL’s house. Did DS2 come over there? No.

Called EU’s house. Did DS2 go over there? EU doesn’t get home usually for another 5 minutes. I’ll call you either way.

On my way out the door when I see him crossing the street! What a relief!

Instead of going this way home:

He went this way:

Go figure.
