I’ve never:
- had to be the one to shovel (only been the one to say “we need to shovel”)
- had to bring up the Christmas tree (only been the one to schedule when to put it up)
- had to assemble the stand and tree (only been the one to make cocoa and cookies while it’s being done)
- had to put lights on a tree (only been the one to keep tempers calm while dealing with strings of lights)
Since it’s clearly a season of 1sts, I’ve decided to start the process early (for us.) I got the tree up the stairs and assembled this afternoon. I think it will take a couple of evenings to “shape” it. I wonder if I can get away with only hanging ornaments and no lights; that should make it a “remember when” type of year!
It occurs to me today, as the boys are at a friend’s house and I’m putting up this tree alone, how much like death divorce is.
And yet the differences are significant. Mostly that friends are so uncomfortable about sharing the grief. Were this a death, I suppose I would be more comfortable asking for help, too.
As it is, I’m learning new skills and trying to be gentle with myself that I don’t do them all well.
