it just keeps getting more surreal
So, yesterday, I’m reading through the newsletter in order to work on the 7/30 bulletin. There I read, for the first time, not only what the “worship themes” are for the month, but also that “the band” is planning to play for worship on 8/6. there’s a big boxed message at the top of the page touting the return of the band under JR and some un-named “vocal ensembles” that will alternate.
What a cowardly, passive-agressive way to communicate. Rather than leave him a note or a voicemail I left him a note asking him to call me before Sunday morning.
Yesterday, I was really worked up about it for most of the afternoon. Adrenaline pumping. It’s probably very good that I’m much colder about it today.
Here’s what I plan to say:
“Hey, thanks for calling. I wanted to talk with you about what’s been going on the last couple of weeks. I read in the newsletter that the band is planning to play on august 6. I have to say that’s a pretty cowardly and disrespectful way to communicate with me about this. I know I’m on the way out, but you did this before you knew that and you had plenty of opportunity on Tuesday and Wednesday to talk with me directly about this.
I’m unclear about how I am supposed to “coordinate” this if you are keeping secret the information. Since you insist on playing the middle, I need to let you know that I have coordinated other plans for the 8/13 and 8/20. Additionally, it is probably best if they work on their own worship folder for the 6th, since I’m not interested in playing the telephone game through you on it.
I know I’m on the way out, but you did this before you knew that. I think you’re afraid to talk with me directly because you know that you have done this in an under-the-table, sneaky way that disrespects not only me, but the WAM committee and the task force. Neither group was going down the path you wanted, so you worked out this arrangement on your own, to drive your own agenda and preferred outcome.”
When and if the subject of me being worship assistant comes up:
“You know, I’m going to decline that offer, mostly because it is insulting. You’ve taken away my job and given it to the band. You’ve either tacitly or overtly given them permission to cut me out of the process. You have allowed them to return to the old mess they made of the roles, probably because you understand the assistant as someone who is there to help you save your voice and not as an actual needed role. The band has taken over most of the assistant’s part. I’m not going to put on an alb and decorate the chancel as some kind of consolation prize for you to feel better. You’ve taken away my job at that service. I don’t need to be there, and I won’t be.”
