the “logic” of the IRS

So, my mom is an “enrolled agent.” This means that she has had to pass a lot of tax exams, much like what a broker has to pass in order to have a Series 7 license. This allows her to represent clients in legal tax proceedings. It also means she is able to represent them when they (the IRS) has made a blunder. (I know…it’s hard to believe, but it happens occasionally.)

She did my taxes for me this year. And wonder of wonders, the IRS’ computer program had a problem with my earned income credit and 2 schedule Cs (I know, the bees are buzzing. Try and stay with me.)

The long and the short of it is that they sent cut my refund by almost $900. Now, to some people that’s pocket change. To me, that’s a week’s vacation at what will probably turn out to be a pretty “rustic” cottage in Wisconsin for me, the boys and the doggy.

ANYWAY, we called on it the first week of May and after a 3 hour phone call were told they would get back to us within two weeks.

TWO MONTHS later, I still hadn’t heard anything.

Mom had to go to an IRS conference/training thingy last week. One of the features at these shindigs is that they have an IRS Advocate there where you can go and present a problem and they will resolve it on the spot…supposedly.

So she signed up for a time and after another 3 hours of explaining it to the woman got her to agree that they had indeed made a mistake. Yeah me! So Mom leaves the meeting with the promise that they would be sending a paper check released Aug. 4.

So, TODAY I’m working on my lovely “Sworn Statement of Assets and Liabilities” and need to check my account where lo and behold, there’s was an electronic deposit made yesterday of an amount that includes interest.

I just think it’s funny that they can’t even be accurate about their payment dates or methods. Not that I’m unhappy that I received the money faster than promised mind you…

Sent a check to the cottage today and called the fishing charter people (I found one where we can be part of a group for 5 hours for only $90 a person!) Watch this space for pictures of me and the boys with giant denizens of Lake Michigan.
