shhh! It’s a secret!

What they don’t know is that I won’t keep their secrets anymore.

We didn’t have a staff meeting this morning because PP had to go to a follow-up doctor appointment for cellulitis in his elbow. Ok. There’s just one quesiton I have before you’re gone for the day.

Who should I be in contact with about the materials for the 10:30 service

um, uh, (shuffling feet) vague response about I forgot to pull that together this morning. I’ve got to get going shortly here. I can pick a hymn of the day before I leave.

Eventually we do hear that JAS has got the music files.

CN reminds him that TB is gone on Thursday and Friday. I pipe up that I’m available to help. I actually say “uh, I’m still here. It’s not like I’ll be gone and I haven’t said I won’t help with the bulletin.”

more shuffling and tap dancing. Leaves with a vague promise to “get something over here if there’s a break during the day.”

About 30 minutes later, SF calls to talk to me. She’s offering to help with the bulletins since she knows that TB is gone at the end of the week. I thank her and tell her I don’t know what help I’ll need because I don’t know anything about the 10:30 bulletin.

Well, why not?

Because I don’t know who I’m supposed to be getting stuff from.

Well that’s ridiculous. Maybe I’ll just get on the phone and start calling around!

No, don’t do that. PP knows, he just won’t tell me. And frankly I don’t want to go into it just now.

Well, I should just call BP and find out.

No! JAS is the person I think who is pulling things together but for whatever reason they don’t want me involved so they aren’t telling me anything. They have apparently got TB on board to do something, but she doesn’t know anything either and they forgot that she’s out Thursday and Friday. I told PP I would help, but he clearly doesn’t want me involved. Thank you for your offer and when I know what kind of help I need, I’ll give you a call.

Well please do, because I’m happy to come over and help. I just don’t understand why it’s such a big secret.

I don’t either. You’ll have to ask one of them.

But really, I do know why it’s a big secret. Because I keep pointing out that they have circumvented any hope of process. The WAM committee has not had any input on this and I would point that out. The WAM committee is adamant about the congregation staying connected by singing the same hymns, and probably, they are picking their own hymns. Probably they are writing the whole service from scratch.

And I keep telling myself that it’s OK because my instinctive reaction is to argue about how wrong the process is. I keep telling myself that it doesn’t matter TO ME, because I won’t be here Sunday and after the 20th it’s NOT MY PROBLEM.

But, I do care because it’s like watching someone driving toward a brick wall at 75 miles an hour.
