stories from vacation

I’m feeling so good about my life today I thought I’d share a bit more about our lovely week in Door County.

We discovered that Door is really quite pet friendly, as long as you don’t want to go into too many shops. Many of the cabins or even hotels welcomed pets.

My very favorite thing about the trip (and I think the boys would agree) was Whitefish Dunes State Park. It is on the western shore or Lake Michigan and it is about 2 miles of white sand beach. No lie. It’s shallow too. The boys waded out about 100 yards and it was only thigh-high. There is some danger of rip-tides so still watch those little ones. Not only that but they have a whole section of the beach where they allow dogs.

This is a rare place, people.

When we were there on Tuesday we practically had the place to ourselves. We went back Thursday and there were lots more folks and lots more dogs. But still a marvelous time. Reminded me of our visits to Seal Beach, CA, but without the salt smell (not that I find that objectionable.)

The archeological evidence shows that the aboriginal people spent seasons here fishing…and probably enjoying the beach with their little ones. Overall, I’d say I can understand why this is a beach that has attracted people for over 2000 years.

The next favorite thing was charter fishing. Even though we all got seasick. DS1 puked once, DS2 puked 3 times. Moms don’t puke.

It was a “mixed group” charter so there were two other people on the trip. They took home 10 fish and we took home 12. (limit is 5 apiece.) You fisherpeople will notice that some of those salmon are 4 year olds (brown and ready to spawn.) It was great fun and I can wholeheartedly recommend First Choice Charters out of Baily’s Harbor. But see your Dr. for the seasick patch. Dramamine doesn’t cut it.

The next favorite part was getting to spend big gobs of time reading. It was just like when I was kid. I finished “The Wastelands” (part III of the Dark Tower. Stephen King), finished “Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons, Lorna Landvik (great read. had me crying in three or four places.) and got about half way through “Shell Shaker” by LeAnne Howe. A great Chocktaw story teller who weaves two murder mysteries together and throws in heaping helpings of background on Chocktaw culture old and new. Finished that this past week.

And that was about it. Some cooking, some eating out. We went to a couple of museums on the rainy days and took a drive around the the whole peninsula (almost a requirement for visiting Door County, I think.) Didn’t buy much stuff. Did find some nummy wool/silk yarn that I got to make a shawl for myself (same pattern as I used for Sister Roseanne.) Mostly spent money on food, gas and state park admissions. Well, and the charter.

All in all a pretty cheap but really good vacation.

Wow! That sounded like so much fun. My dad is from Ohio and I wouldn’t mind taking a vacation like that. It seems like the boys had a wonderful time. I’m jealous. I got to take my kid on a Disney cruise this summer, but your vacation sounds so much more relaxing. I am glad you had a good vacation.
