13 begins

DS2 had his party last night. He invited 2 friends over for an over-night of X-Box and movies. Apparently, while they were talking about it, “some of the girls” overheard. He paged me at the hospital around 4:30 yesterday. When I called, he told me that the girls had invited themselves over for the party.
Me: not for the overnight part though right?
DS2: No, just for the pizza part. Just to say “happy birthday.”
Me: Yeah, no problem. (thinking: how cuuuuute! I wonder which one of them has a crush on him?)

So I race in the door at 5:59 p.m. DS2 has picked up the laundry in the living room and moved the x-box downstairs. The girls arrive at 6:05.
Girls: We hope you don’t mind that we came over
Me: Not at all! I’m glad you did. I’m going to order pizzas in a minute and you’re welcome to stay.
Girls: Oh, well, we already ate dinner.
Me: (thinking– they really did just come over to hang out and say “happy birthday!” How cute!)

The boys showed up a few minutes later. As I wandered around looking for the pizza places phone number (there’s a great neighborhood restaurant I like to order from instead of “The Hut”) the 7 kids laughed and goofed around getting the music going and generally just being a goofy bunch of 12-13 year old kids.

It was great!

After I ordered pizza and we got the TV into the living room, I made myself scarce upstairs. The girls left around 7:00 of their own decision. The pizza came around 7:30. I had to go out to Target because we were out of dog food. I was bummed about that because I was EXHAUSTED. Oh well. YM went with me and we browsed through all the halloween decorations.

We dragged home around 8:45. I had a beer and went to bed.

The kids did fine. DS2 says they went to bed around 2 a.m. and they were up around 10. I didn’t go downstairs until about 11:30 to make pancakes and eggs. There was no milk (too tired last night to remember what else I was at Target for, I guess.) but they were fine.

lesson learned: 13 year old boys don’t care so much about perfectly clean homes, ice cream and cake or decorations. All the things I was stressing about not being to have ready really didn’t matter. Exhaustion helped me learn that because there was just no way that I could have done anything more than I did to get ready.
