cabin fever

Just got back from visiting the cabin. It’s going to be perfect. It’s not a 1 room hermitage, but it’s simple and small and just right for watching the wind blow across the ice on the lake.

The boys and the dog mostly played outside while I chatted with M & D. They showed me how to turn on the heat, where the lightswitches were and how to finesse the fireplace. There will be TV available and a DVD player, but really, I think if I want to watch a DVD I’ll just watch it on my computer rather than try to figure out remote controls.

The luxury? The outhouse is heated. So I’ll have that going for me!

They showed me how to close it up; how to fix the drain (they have running water in the summer, they just blow out the lines for the winter to prevent freezing) how to leave the heat, close the shades, etc. We talked about which neighbors are likely to be around and which will possibly come to check and make sure I’m not some hooligan having broken into their cabin. Shovel? check. Binoculars? check. Telescope? check, but I have to figure out how to set it up. Stocked liquor cabinet? double check.

Like I said. Perfect. Didn’t ask if there was a cork-screw, so if I bring up wine I better bring my own. Which is not to say I’m beyond gouging out the cork with a paring knife if I have to.

It really is only about a sixty-minute drive from the house. This is going to be sweet.
