Music appreciation 101…maybe 200
Found out about this site on Friday. I’m late to the party, I know, but if you are even more out of the loop than I am, you have to check this out.
Seems Bill Graham’s real name was Wolfgang. For those of you who don’t know or remember who Bill Graham was, among other things, he was the guy who ran The Fillmore, Fillmore East and other bastions of cool hippness beginning in the 60’s. The places where rock and roll names were made.
Seems ol’ Bill wasn’t just an impresario. Seems he was a collector too. And one of the things he collected were recordings. Recordings of every live show performed at his clubs. Recordings he made directly from the sound boards. Remarkably good recordings. Recordings of live shows where some of these performers are in love with performing for the intimate audiences these venues provided. Legendary recordings.
“They” (I don’t know who they are. Haven’t read that much on the site. I was too busy browsing through the list of available concerts and trying, trying to decide what to listen to) are working on digitizing these concerts and have put about 300+ of them (so far!) on this website called Wolfgang’s Vault.
Last night I listened to Joan Baez, James Taylor, Muddy Waters and Preservation Hall. I didn’t get to The Who, Santana, Steve Miller, Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, David Bowie or about eleventy hundred others.
I only remember hearing about this scene from stolen peeks into The Rolling Stone subscriptions of older brothers and sisters of my friends. If you are older, and actually knew (or were in attendance at!!!) some of these events, this will be like looking into an old yearbook. If you are younger and have never heard of this before, don’t wait. Go and listen to what real rock and roll was like.
Go. Listen. Learn. Enjoy.
