Christmas Eve 2006
No sleeping in. DS1 started vomiting at 6am.
Trying to decide if I call my mom and sister and tell them not to come or if I can keep this contained so they are not exposed. CDC website says one can become infected with as little as 10 viral particles…also known as 1 drop of vomit spray.
The hospital had posted contact precautions and provided gloves, gown and mask. I have none of that here. Also from the CDC website:
Patients with suspected norovirus infection should be managed with Standard Precautions with careful attention to hand hygiene practices. However, Contact Precautions should be used when caring for diapered or incontinent persons, during outbreaks in a facility, and when there is the possibility of splashes that might lead to contamination of clothing. Persons cleaning areas heavily contaminated with vomitus or feces should wear surgical masks as well. In an outbreak setting, it may be prudent to place patients with suspected norovirus in private rooms or to cohort such patients.
He probably was exposed on Friday after school when he and his buddies went out to dinner at some skanky restaurant where they don’t make sure the staff washes their hands.
The most dangerous aspect of this virus is the potential for dehydration that could require hospitalization. I’m worried about DS1 because he’s so skinny to start with. Plus, he has been seriously sick on Christmas so many times before (one year when he was 4 or 5 years old, he actually slept through opening presents at X’s parents’ because he felt so crappy.)
Anyone want to take bets on when I come down with this? CDC says onset is 12-48 hours with the average being about 30. That puts it about tomorrow afternoon.
Duration is 24-60 hours, although the health sheets they put out at the hospital said to stay home 72.
Trying to decide if I should just skip the cabin or go up and see how long before I start puking in the outhouse.
Not very jolly yet, am I?
