X-ray Hip
Not what you’re thinking. It’s the name of GolfPro’s band. ( That’s a link to their MySpace page.)
SaxMan and I had a nice dinner at Barley John’s Brew Pub. (review coming later in another post.) I couldn’t finish my hamburger (it was huge!) so we stopped back at the house quickly so I could put it in the fridge, instead of forgetting it in his car later in the evening. It was right on the way. We had plenty of time as X-ray Hip was the scheduled second band.
We spent a little time looking at pictures and then headed out for Club Underground. There were very few people there at 9:30. Not at all what I expected given the pictures on their web-site and the stories I’d heard from the folks at the coffee shop. This felt more like the somebody said “Hey, my dad has a basement at his bar. We could put on a show!” Ok. It was a little more thought out than that, but OMG the couches against the wall they show in those pictures are 1) the MOST uncomfortable pieces of furniture I have ever sat in. And I have a Norwegian grandmother. and 2) I was mighty glad I didn’t have a one of those CSI black lights shining on the upholstery. If you know what I mean.
The guys in the band were all sort of hanging out. A few of the wives and other friends, although no real “golf” crew. GolfPro’s parents were there. Very cute. Had their earplugs. Wish I’d have remembered mine. It’s been too darn long since I’ve been to see a bar band. And I forgot how crappy and over-loud the sound can be.
The first band was horrible. I mean embarrassing. I was most impressed by the professionalism of the guys in X-ray Hip while this other group was playing. Not one of them made derogatory remarks or smirked and they applauded after every song.
Yeah. I wasn’t so professional, nor was SaxMan. The most painful thing was that they didn’t look like they were having any fun. And why play in a bar band if you’re not having any fun? The girl bass player looked terrified most of the time.
X-ray Hip took the stage around 10:30.
Wow!
They play well. They sing well. The songs were ironic, a little snarky, fun, even a couple of sensitive ones. AND they had a BLAST on stage. Totally loving the “I’m in an effing rock band!” moment.
And did I mention they’re all pretty hot? And they’re all at least 6′2″ tall. It was pretty funny to see such a tall group of men (6 of them including the drummer…who admittedly was sitting) just rocking out. I never got a good look at the drummer (Cookie, who has a legendary reputation among the guys. “If he gets half as much as he says he does, he’s a maniac.” Or something to that effect.) because he was too busy chatting with the three or four women who came to see him.
We left pretty much as soon as the band was done. It was 11:30 and SaxMan was tired. If I had slowed down and listened to my energy level, I was too. It was Friday night, for pete’s sake! I’ve fallen asleep at professional soccer games on Friday nights. With 22 men in shorts running around after a ball. Fridays can be tough. Just saying.
SaxMan walked me in. I made some tea for his drive home and we sat and talked for a bit more before he made his way home. Libby (the wonder poodle) is alarmed by him. I don’t know if it’s because he’s so tall, or because he was kilting (ok, it wasn’t really that. What do dogs know about that?) but she peed on the floor about 3 times over all the visits at the house we did last night. Also, she was her usual “but mommy, pay attention to me” self when I was trying to have a good night kiss. Complete with a little barking. Next time she gets shut up in the basement.
It was a lovely evening.

Sounds like a lovely evening. Glad you had fun. I am trying to catch up on your posts, so it may take me a day. But I will!
