Conceit
An open letter to my friends JvH and AR…and probably a few others,
What have you done that makes you think that you are so unlovable? So unworthy of anyone wanting to be in relationship with you? Why, of all the people on this planet, are you so unworthy?
Sometimes we believe the messages, the little tapes in our heads. We believe the random abandonments of life actually occurred because of something we did or didn’t do. Something we were or weren’t.
It is so easy for me to look at you and see the good, lovable, funny, insightful, interesting aspects of your nature. Your creativity, your passion, your compassion. How is it that none of that matters to you? Why are you so willing to put your life on hold, into a temporary death, based on one of those tapes?
What have you done that makes you the most unworthy, unlovable person on the planet?
Why are you so afraid of the risk? What is the worst thing that will happen?
Oh.
I think I know. You’re afraid you’ll be abandoned again. That you won’t be “enough” for that person to stay with you.
What’s that? How do I know that?
Because I’m afraid of the same thing.
