I have 3 days
In exchange for displaying a sign in my front yard, I’m having a security system installed in the house. I will need to pay about $40 per month for monitoring. 3 years contract.
I hadn’t really thought much about installing a system since right after the separation. But the guy came by. I checked the company. Made sure he was a “real” employee. Asked the quesitons.
The internal argument goes something like this:
Me: Are you really going to give in to fear and do this?
Me: You’re a single woman in this house alone most of the time.
Me: You have a dog.
Me: That puts up a good show until someone actually comes in the house. And then she either pees or begs to be petted. Or both.
Me: Are you really going to cave to the culture of fear?
Me: I need to protect my family. No one else is going to do it.
Me: So you’re going to spend $40 a month out of fear.
Me: I can afford it. I paid off the last credit card today. LN’s projects keep coming. It will be OK.
Me: I still think you’re doing this out of fear.
See? What do I need a man for if I can have satisfying arguments like that with myself?
Anyone want to weigh in on either side of this here argument? I have three days to cancel the order.

I stumbled onto your blog from Tales from the scales - and, um. I have a man in my life and a rifle in my closet and we still have a security system.
Why? Because we were robbed while we were both at work about 10 years ago. That’s when most robberies happen .. while you’re gone.
A security system is a great thing to keep you safe - but also to help protect your belongings when you’re not home. Does that help?
And sometimes, a dog just makes noise.

I say do it if only for peace of mind. We do have a security system and, man or not, there is something comforting to me to know that it will sound an alarm if someone attempts to break into the house (nighttime especially).
Don’t beat yourself up too much…I had that same conversation in my head because of those darn salesmen that try to “scare” you into buying it.
I’d get it just to be safe.
That’s my .02,

You talk about fear as if it’s an inherently bad thing.
Fear makes sense in a lot of circumstances. We’re scared of the dark because we can’t SEE in the dark. You know? You have a fear of being robbed? That’s for a lot of rational reasons. So you are addressing an appropriate fear.
You know?
Boy, I’m all opinionated tonight.
