Jubilee
A bit of random observations and notes is all we have today.

Finished the weaving of DS2’s rug tonight before vespers.

Walked to the labyrinth with the boys after lunch and before the Jubilee auction. DS2 took the lead at the labyrinth and DS1 followed me. No idea whether they prayed or simply walked or really what they felt about the whole thing.

Talked briefly with N about village musician position, how it seems to be PT now. She said: "A lot of positions have been cut because they realized they were fat."
Great. Now even Holden Village thinks what I do is a worthless.
That made it hard to pay attention during the festival Eucharist.
They have a full time potter, but a musician? Too extravagant! Besides the pastor plans the worship anyways. And afterall, there are lots of people on staff that are musicians. So now, this place apart that has been for me such a formative place in my life has determined that, like the rest of the world, what I am is really rather frivolous. Of much greater importance are carpenters and bookkeepers and cooks. Even child care workers and craft teachers are more important to the life of the village than a musician. Because afterall, they make things. All I do is make noise; and help others to make noise. And all the times I’ve exhorted people that "we all are made to sing praise to God," that "all can sing," has come back to bite me in the ass, I guess. Because afterall, if everyone is made to sing, then why does the world need me? I am superfluous.
Spent the rest of the evening after vespers feeling like a cosmic joke that nobody even had the courtesy to laugh at.
That little pity party combined with wandering through and among all the flipping happy "couples" that are in a place like this (being a family oriented retreat center) and it was a pretty pissy evening.

The boys and M&N dished ice cream at the snack bar after vespers tonight. It was fun to see them working and doing such a great job. I took a few pictures…just to tick them off.
Hannah V. is on staff. She is a girl that DS1 met when we were here 3 years ago and she and her brother (who is DS1’s age) have been keeping in touch by email ever since. She recognized DS1 at the snack bar. She’s 18 now and working here for 3 months and taking a year before starting college.

I finished Harry Potter #7 tonight.
No comments and no spoilers.

I bought a bunch of pottery today. Some for presents and some for me. It’s sort of a tradition to come home with a piece of Holden pottery. From one of those FT village potters. Yeah.
Got a couple of things at the silent auction. A set of photographic note cards and one of the old "If it’s yellow, let it mellow" potty signs. Sentimental reasons. The new septic system actually requires more dilution of the ‘yellow’ in order to keep the beneficial bacteria going so they’ve all been taken down and an era has come to an end. Next thing you know, we’ll be able to flush tampons.
DS2 bought a ’scary’ clay mask and a coffee mug at the silent auction.
At the live auction I bought an Alpaca throw from Chile (mostly on DS2’s urging…although it is soft and cozy…not big enough to lay on in front of a fireplace. though….I don’t think…) and 3 nights in a home in Phoenix, AZ good only during Jan-Feb 2008. I’m counting that last impulse purchase on the Holy Spirit. Why I didn’t bid on the B&B in Seattle that I could use next week I don’t know. But apparently I’m going to need a place to stay for 3 days next winter in Phoenix. Who knew.
All the proceeds of today’s Jubilee auctions were split between a Christian orphanage in Katmandu and Wilderness Canoe Base in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota.
The pottery purchases just benefited the village.
