Vacation rhythm

A daily seista is a pleasant part of vacation. Just saying.

The boys hiked with M up to Hart lake on Friday. They left after breakfast and were back around 4:30. They brought 4 fish with them. Apparently, fishing was good at Hart. They caught around 10 each. They had a good time. DS1 came back with a serious sunburn though. It hasn’t blistered, which is a good thing, but I get so angry that he won’t listen to me and wear sunscreen. In true adolescent fashion, the threat of skin cancer is only a scare tactic of his mother’s and not a real threat to his health.

Friday evening, after Vespers, I joined some other long term staff at M&N’s for mojitos. It was a nice evening but I still felt a little "aware" of the gap of our relationship.

Saturday was another lazy day. Mostly because the boys didn’t want to hike because they were still tired from the day before. I did spend some time down at the river with DS2 throwing rocks and playing "the game." The game consists of throwing a stick or piece of wood into a slower moving side-channel of Railroad creek and thenĀ  throwing rocks at the wood trying to keep it from getting too close to the far bank, or from getting too far down stream. So it’s a combination of hitting the target and using the wake of the thrown rocks to maneuver the wood where you want it to go.

Last night we played double-15 dominoes with M&N until about 11:00 p.m. Which of course meant that the boys were very slow to wake this morning.

Sundays at Holden include sung Matins (usually using the setting in Gather, as we did this morning) and then Eucharist during the evening service. I’m assisting minister tonight, so I have to prepare to lead the psalm and write the intercessions, plus a sing some other small parts of the liturgy. It’s good to get to do that work here. I know that proves and certifies that I’m a church geek.

I really would like to hike to 10 Mile Falls today but the boys keep putting me off. John deGraff is in the village this week and his first session is this afternoon. It is a screening of one of his movies (Motherhood Manifesto, I think) and then a discussion. It will be the one and only session I’ve been to all week! As I told EH earlier this week, it has been my pattern to use my time at Holden to disengage from the intellectual aspect of my life and focus on other things.

Yeah. Either that or I just want to be outside. Same thing.
