Another yearly ritual held

Every year since DS1 was about 13 or 14 years old, I’ve had this little ritual when I fill out his health papers for school. Especially since he started high school and there’s a clinic at the school.

Me:    Hey, DS1. I’m filling out these papers for the clinic at school. I’m saying you can go, but if you need condoms or something I’ll get them for you.

DS1:     Huh?

Me:    I said, I’ll give you money for condoms if you need them. I’d rather buy you condoms than have you contract some STD or make a baby.

DS1:    Why do you say that?!!!? I don’t want to talk about this?!?!? You are so weird!!!

Me:    (laughing) What? It’s like asking if you need deodorant or toothpaste! It’s part of life. Sure, I’d rather you’d wait until you were older, but if you’re going to be sexually active, I want you to use protection.

DS1:    [groaning]

Me:    OK. Well I just want you to know…

DS1:    Can I go now? Geez! Why do you keep doing this?

Me:     What?

DS1:    Talking about this with me!!! I’m gonna do it just to piss you off!

Me:    Yeah. People do that a lot…start having sex just to piss off their parents.

DS1:    Stop it! I’m going now!

All the while little bro is eavesdropping and giggling at DS1’s discomfort when I turn to him and say: Look, the offer stands for you too! he lowers the volume and tries to look like he’s still laughing at his brother.

But I really want them to know I mean that. I would/will freak out when I know they’re sexually active. But I’d rather buy them what they need to be safe then to bury my head in the sand about it.

I wonder if it is easier to have boys or girls in this regard? It freaks me out too!

I used to work in a clinic, and I saw enough 12 year old pregnant girls to last me a lifetime. I think it’s awesome that you’re making them aware and accountable…And the fact that it’s so embarrassing to them is just an added bonus.

Make them babysit some toddlers and they’ll never even think of having sex.
