another gift idea.
If you need an idea for a little kid, might I recommend this book?
From the Author’s website:
KIKI’s HATS is the lively story of a spunky and lovable woman who knits hats and gives them away. Oh, but it is also a story about you and me. Kids and adults. And how much FUN it can be to do something good for someone else.
It can be as simple as knitting a hat. Or visiting someone who is sick.
It could also be building a house for someone who needs it. Or raising a pile of money and giving it away.We each have the power to create something good that can last a lifetime — and beyond.
That’s the miracle of Kiki’s Hats!
It’s by the same guy that wrote and illustrated this:

Warren wrote this one (and I read it weeping in the bookstore ) a few years before I met him and he became my friend. He’s done a lot of other work too. (Peef, and Cup of Christmas Tea are his illustrations)
But I love this new story. Partly because I watched him and talked with him through the whole process. Working over the germ of the idea, searching for the right way to say it, struggling through illustrations, pushing toward deadlines and now the book tour. I didn’t “see” drafts or sketches or anything. I saw it in his face, in his voice when answering the “how’s it going” question.
And I love that the story of Kiki’s Hats is about how to serve others by doing what brings you joy. In that way it’s a book that talks about the diaconal work we are all called to. Holy service to others. Service that’s made holy because it’s given in a spirit of love and compassion and generosity.
It’s that kind of work that some people think they need to do in order to get the Old Mighty to approve of them. Other people (like me) think that it’s the kind of work one does because the Old Mighty has already done such great things for them. (It’s a response to a free gift, not a bargain where I have to hold up my end of the deal. Because frankly? I’ll never hold up my end of the deal perfectly and if God’s love for me is conditional on how good and perfect a person I am, I’m screwed. Not to put too fine a point on it.)
Whichever way you come at it maybe isn’t really the point. The point is to do the work.
Help. Look out for others. Take care of the ones who are shut out and shunned.
That’s a universal truth and command.
Anyway. If you’re giving gifts this time of year and you want to give a picture book to someone and you think you want them to hear a message about how to give to others, I’d recommend Kiki’s Hats.
And order from the author’s site. That way you can get it signed.
(and we’ll see if he tracks his incoming URL traffic and finds me here in this little corner of the blogosphere ;-) )

How sweet. I wish I had a little kid to buy that for.
