Cold Watch 2008

The coughing has begun. Crackling ears and cotton mouth, too. I’m not sure which is worse: helium head when on the cold medicine or lead head when off the cold medicine. But so far, it’s not actually the worst cold I’ve ever had. Yet.

Peer Gynt was an…..interesting play. It was a translation/adaptation by Robert Bly. The one thing I will say about it: it was way too long. 3 1/2 hours is more than any show that’s not a musical should ever be. I don’t know if they need to tighten up cues, or if some things just need to be cut outright.

It’s a lot more light-hearted than Ibsen’s usual work (read The Doll House if you want a real taste of Norwegian psychology….winter is just too darn long up there.) At least it was more light-hearted/funny in the first three acts. The fourth and fifth began to show a lot more of the usual Ibsen moroseness. I suppose one can’t blame Ibsen for being a man of his times (the play was written in 1832) but I pretty much hated the ending. Peer has wandered the world making and losing a fortune while “the love of his life,” Solveig has waited for him in a cabin up in the mountains. She’s been alone her whole life, faithfully waiting and going blind, and when he finally returns to her, he expects her to comfort him and “be his wife and mother. Let me live in you.” Blech.

What about a partnership?

Anyway.

I mostly slept this afternoon after church. Trying to force fluids but not doing too good a job of it.

Went to dinner with the people from the J-term class. It was good to get to see them. DB was there, wearing a beautiful cabled sweater she made. We talked and caught up. It was great. Most of them will be able to be here on Tuesday.

OK. I’m going to take a Tylenol PM and go to bed. The last couple of nights have been pretty late and with this cold I’m really paying for it.

I have much catching up to do in the blogosphere. Hope all is well out there. I’ll be by soon.

Feel better… don’t like it that you aren’t feeling well.
