Beach blanket fake-out

One time, when the boys were really little, and I was staying home with them, it was a really hard winter. Cabin fever and the winter doldrums had us by the throat and wasn’t letting go.

So I cranked up the heat to around 80 or even higher (it was an old drafty house, so I’m sure we didn’t get there.) I turned on every light in the house and laid blankets on the living room floor. I got out a plastic bin which I filled with warm water and beach toys.

We put Barney on the VCR and had a picnic by the “lake” and pretended it was summer. It was a mess to clean up but totally worth it.

What would be the equivalent today?

BTW, I priced out a weekend escape to the LA area. Can’t swing it for the three of us and I’m too much of a mom to go by myself on a weekend when they’re with their dad.

Now that sounds like a nice thing to do for your kids when they were little. Sadly, it does get harder to recreate that feeling when they’re older!

How cool. I could go for a little beach fake-out myself right now.

They opened an indoor water-park and resort on the shores of beautiful Lake Erie. Apparently, it feels warm and sunny in this place even in this cold and gray crap. I heard that this too is rather pricey for a weekend.

What a great idea! I have no idea what the equivalent for today would be - but I hope you or someone comes up with it! I miss the days I used to pack up my three toddler boys and drive to construction (or better yet - demolition) sites. The boys would eat their sandwiches and hang over the back seat looking out the window oohing an ahhing at the big machines. Fun and free! The closest I get to that kind of time with them now is going for a run with them (only they have to go too slow to stay with me!) or listening to their music. Peace.
