Insomnia
I don’t know if it’s the weather change, the final stage of SAD, something to do with the level of stress I’ve been dealing with or some weird grief work I’m finish about Mr. Hockey, but I’ve had a bit of insomnia for the last week or so.
Libby the Adventure Poodle has played her part in this too, waking at 3 AM for a middle of the night tour of the yard on the nights I seem to be sleeping through.
ANYWAY.
Sunday night, after the Oscars finished I went to bed around 11:00. I read for about an hour and then laid there until well after 3:00 AM. Not sleeping. Some tossing. Some turning. But no sleeping. I tried relaxation techniques, meditation and just following the thoughts. Nothing worked.
I had meetings Monday, so there was no sleep/working at home for me. As I stopped at the coffee shop for something that would get me through I had a song going through my head. But I knew the tune I heard and the lyric I was singing weren’t actually a match. “Insomnia, insomnia, that sucks.” No known pop song actually has these lyrics, but I could hear it! Complete with drumming, background vocals and guitar licks.
I was not making that part up.
All day that little hook swirled around in my head.
Monday night, after supper, I was searching the YouTubes because maybe, just maybe I did have the lyric right? There is a song called Insomnia, but it was not the right song.
Me: Gah! I wish I could figure out this song!
DS1: What song?
Me: I don’t know the name, but all that keeps going around in my head is “insomnia, insomnia” but I don’t think those are the real words.
DS2 (without looking up from the gameboy): it’s Nausea.
Me: That’s it!
DS1: By Beck? How do you know that song?
Me: Hey! I don’t live under a rock.
With that mystery solved (by the magical intuition and psychic connection of DS2) I took a shower and went to bed (not too early) hoping that Monday night would be the night the cycle broke.
Went to bed without doing a ton of laundry or cleaning the kitchen or even picking up my room. Just hoping that my brain would stop spinning long enough to enter the blessed realm of dreamland.
Thankfully, it worked. I wouldn’t say I’m “caught up” but I slept well, with goofy dreams (apparently I’m interviewing Alanis Morrisette this afternoon) and I feel much better this morning.

You picked a good song to get stuck in your head, at least.
Feel good, amigo.

Nausea - insomnia - it’s all the same. I do like that song, though.
You might want to buy some Nyquil or something when you absolutely have to get some sleep.

I had the insomnia for a week or two as well. It has since passed.
Hopefully everything with you stops swirling around and you can settle for a bit. Hopefully the dog chills out some in the coming weeks as well.
