Corporate Intrigue
Did I mention that a week ago, the VP of Marketing at my corporate job “left to pursue other interests?”
(For those of you who haven’t been around for a while, that is corporate-speak for “We had to let her go. There will be no going-away party.”)
Yesterday, it was announced that our CEO would be doing the same thing and that a New Guy from the Parent Company would be taking his direct reports beginning immediately.
The communication was all handled quite well. Our VP of HR is good like that. One reason I took the job: because I could trust her as well as LN.
Still it’s fun to watch the young ‘uns get their undies in a bunch about this stuff. All sorts of interesting questions come out of their heads. Will Parent Company move our HQ to their home-city? Who is next? Is this all? Are we going out of business?
Most all of which is just empty worrying and rather silly.
I do think there might be one more departure on the slate. At least I’m hoping. Because, dude, we could totally use a new VP of IT.
As for most of us? We are cogs and cogs don’t come to the attention of the Parent Company Big Wigs unless something really really really bad happens. Just relax and do your job so you can give me the information I need to do mine.
One really interesting thing to note, was LN’s comment to me today. I’ve always known a couple of things about LN. 1) He really doesn’t like the status quo. Put another way, he’s a work-a-holic who LOVES the challenge of a entrepreneurial start-up. When a company gets established, the sparkle is gone for him. (and being bought by a giant parent company and having them re-org your upper managment is past the start-up phase.) and 2) He was pretty tight with the CEO.
So, I was only a little surprised that he told me today that he’d be following CEO to wherever he ends up in 8 months or so. I wasn’t surprised that he’d do that. I was surprised that he told me. Of course, I won’t say anything, but it leads me to think that that’s just about the time I’ll be finishing my first year of internship. Given what Sr. N said last week at lunch, I could start looking for a FT call and bag the second year of internship.
Of course, the other weird thing about LN’s disclosure was “…and you’re coming with me! You’ll never get back to the church.”
It was the maniacal laughter that set me back a little.
Uh, right. Let’s just file that little prediction with the Farmer’s Almanac and Nostradamus and check in on it in about nine months, shall we?

I always enjoy the “sky is falling-chicken little” mentality that hits the working floor of a company when something big happens to the suits. People are so alarmist and so programmed to overreact. I have worked in corporate world for quite some time now and have learned the art of separation…how to separate fact from fiction and when to separate from Chicken Littles.

I’m kind of happy not to be working for a corporation. There is still a lot of BS to deal with when working for the state, but we’re pretty well protected by our union.

NoRegrets–ROFLMAO!!! No, I’m not “really really really young” I just took a long time to figure out that it’s OK to be happy in my work and to go for it. So I’m doing the mid-life career correction thing.
