Shower Adventure
So, I had a friend with a steam cleaner come in and clean my shower. You know, to get all the soap scum and mildew off the tile and grout and such.
Of course, the steam cleaner removed some of the grout/caulk along with the mildew that was in there so then the shower leaked like a sieve.
Today, I went and got some caulk and proceeded to remove the rest of the loose stuff in preparation for putting new caulk in and having a nice water-tight shower again that didn’t create a rain garden in the basement.
As I pulled a stip of caulk from along the bottom edge of tiles a whole row of tiles basically fell off the wall. Down at the bottom.
Here’s my question. Do I really need to use mortar to re-attach these tiles or can I stick them back on there with a tub-surround adhesive and then waterproof caulking where grout ought to go?
As DS1 says: “See? What have I told you about cleaning?”
- Look! New Tools
- What's up with a tool that needs to be assembled?
- HA! Did it!
- Notice the mildewy caulk that is now loose
- More loose caulk by the shower door
- Apparently the mildewy caulk was actually holding on the tiles
- Those probably have to come off too

Oh, wow. That looks like an adventure we had in our last house. Tiles, slipped and gone. Finally MathMan replaced them, but the old colors couldn’t be matched so he had to come up with a new pattern or replace all the tiles. It was a chore, but, honestly, I think he enjoyed it somehow. The end product was light years better than the original moldy tiles.
MathMan says if the grout you have says grout AND adhesive, you should be fine.

Do the best job possible as to not have it happen again. A little more time and possible expense could pay off in the long run.
