9th grade open house

I ran the gauntlet of my day and made it to the open house 10 whole minutes early. X and DS2 walked in pretty much on time even though they had no where else to be before that. Whatever.

We met all the teachers, found all the rooms. Saw a few friends and found out that he will have a few people he knows in a few of his classes. Both boys are crabby as old bears. They get that from their mother, I think.

When I got home, JMC and DS1 had shifted a bunch of stuff out o Sr B’s room. If everyone showed up tomorrow they would have a place to sleep that was cleared of mouse poo and corpses. (JMC said they found a dead one behind the buffet when they moved that…in order to move the boxes of dining room stuff out of the bedroom Sr B. is going to use. It’s a Tetris puzzle around here, people. Trust me.)

Then I spent about 90 minutes talking with Sr.G. It was a good discussion on many levels. Not the least in that she gave me the impression I have nothing to worry about as far as approval process. Not that I was. I don’t have energy for that beyond trying to get the tasks done. But we also talked a LOT about the fact that Sr.N had notified all of the candidates about her new call and the fact that her last day in her current job for the community would be the end of Sept.

There’s a lot there. The committee needs to name an interim director who will start the same day N leaves so there is no vacuum of power that DD could slip into, causing nothing but trouble for the committee, the community, candidates and the next director. We talked about the Oct retreat and whether N couldn’t maybe be there anyway, as part of the transition. We talked about getting a group of people to go to week-long leadership training in Nov so that DD doesn’t have those tools all by herself and so that I’m not the only one who can have accountability conversations with her.

What we did not talk about is who will replace N. Nor did we talk about how, when seeing the synod job posted I thought I should apply because I wanted to do what N was doing (same job but for two different organizations/entities.) And we sure didn’t talk about how N told me that she was slated for that job but she wanted to propose me to replace her in her community version of the role. We DID talk about how I am writing my approval papers and will have those ready by Sept 22. A short 3 weeks away.

I’m excited from the conversation and don’t know if I can fall asleep. I’m exhausted from the summer and especially the last couple of weeks. I want things to remain the same for a couple of minutes. I want it all to change; NOW. I need to ground DS1 for being obstinate and evasive and manipulative about where he’s going and how much time he’s got to do chores. I want to lift the house arrest and let him go to the State Fair with his girlfriend.

I’m in "that place" again. I wish I knew what to call it.

Wow. That’s a lot of stuff, both good and bad. You need to make yourself take a day off. is there any way you can arrange that?

You are busy - mentally and physically. I hate being in that place regarding the discipline of children. I hope you’ll have time to relax this weekend.
