Teen driver

Last Monday, DS1 passed his driving test. He is not like me at all regarding driving. I turned 16 on a Saturday and couldn’t believe that I couldn’t take the test that very day. The injustice of having to wait all the way to the next week was almost unbearable! But DS1 turned 17 this past May and didn’t really feel the need to schedule a driving test until last month.

So, early Monday morning, X took him out to get grandma’s automatic transmission car and took him to the testing center. He passed on the first try.

I thought that since he hadn’t been in much of a hurry to practice or get his license in the first place, that having the actual license wouldn’t be that big of a deal. Oh, you silly mommy!

Monday evening he asked if he could take the car to go pick up The Girlfriend so she could hang out at the house for a while. My response? “Sure. Can you pick up a gallon of milk while you’re out?”  Hee.

Tuesday, the boys had a final soccer team meeting after school. “How will you get home?” I asked. “Uh, I could probably get a ride from somebody. Unless you think I could drive to school? Then I could bring DS2 home right away,” he suggested. Smart boy. So, he drove to school the second day of his license.

Today and tomorrow there is no school due to teacher convention. I dropped Libby the Wonder Poodle at the groomer this morning, came home and parked the car and took the bus downtown. DS1 will go to pick her up around 11 when she is done. Of course, I left just barely enough gasoline in the car for him to get to the groomer and home. If he wants to tool around town all day in my car, he’ll have to figure out where to get some money for gas. All part of my evil plan to teach him responsibility and the cost of living.

The trips and running around this new license is going to save me is going to be huge, I tell you. Huge.

That’s so cool. I have a stick, so it might be harder for my girls to run all my errands for me. Damn. I wish I could afford a new automatic transmission car.
