Friday Five – HGTV Edition

This Friday Five from RevGalBlogPals is perfect for me these days.

1) If you could, what room in the place you are currently living would you redo first?

For serious remodeling I think the first thing on the list would be the upstairs bathroom. I actually have started looking at design stuff for it, even though I don’t know how in the world even that modest little room could possibly be paid for. It is amazing how much even small improvements cost. But I’m really getting tired of those ugly cabinets.

2) What is the most hideous feature/color/decor item you have ever seen in a home?

You might think it would be those bathroom cabinets, but actually the cabinet in the first floor bath was worse. But I think the “winner” at this house was the primary colors scheme this house had when we moved in. Yellow kitchen, red dining room, sky blue entry room and tan (with golden shag carpeting) in the living room. I think the worst part was the wagon wheel light fixtures and the faux beamed ceiling in the sunshine yellow kitchen; complete with vertically striped (yellow, orange and brown) soffit wallpaper.

3) What feature do you most covet? Do you have it? If not, is it within reach?

The thing I would like most that is not within reach is a sauna. I’d prefer a backyard wood-burning unit big enough for 4-6 people please.

4) Your kitchen – love it or hate it? Why?

Love that it’s big enough for a kitchen table, lots of cupboards and room for people to gather while I cook.

Hate that the layout is such that it is a walk to unload the dishwasher and not much natural light.

5) Here is $10,000 and you HAVE to spend it on the place you are living now. What do you do?

The upstairs bathroom. Or the backyard. I’m torn right now.

BONUS: Why do you think there was such a surplus of ugly bathroom tile colors showcased in all homes built from the 1950’s right through the early 80’s?

My theory is that the colors weren’t considered “ugly” then. But colored tile gets dated so quickly and is a lot harder to change than paint or even wallpaper. That’s why I’m a big fan of classic white ceramic tile. The color scheme and accents can be changed by a quick coat of paint and a set of towels.

I love everything about my place, considering it is newly renovated. But I would love a steam shower
