This Journey

Thoughts, rants, prayers, sermons I'll never give and other stuff gathered as I make my way through this life.

January 1, 2009

In this post, I shall try to channel my good bloggy pal and party animal, Churlita.

I attended a black-tie party last night thrown by SC (a.k.a as the guy who has cut my hair for the last 10 years) (a.k.a as a genius) and a bunch of his buddies. Every couple of years they get a wild hair and throw a big bash. Mostly it’s so they have a place to play, because most respectible places wouldn’t book this band for NYE. Mostly because of the crazy play list. They play pretty well.

Here’s a sideways picture of the centerpieces. Do me a favor and just tip your head, mmk?

The guys usually spend most of the day setting up the venu, not just the band stuff, but the decorations as well. This year was a little subdued but still tasteful. This year they held it in the chalet at Theodore Wirth golf (a.k.a Sliding Hill in the dead of winter.)

Some of the people at the table.

After dinner, the band started playing. There was a lot of dancing but I didn’t really get up until later. I think it’s been so long that I’ve really participated in a dance party that I needed a long time to warm up. Or something. It was fun watching and chatting though.

The band kept reminding everyone that there were “extra” percussion instruments available. At one point this crazy chick thought maybe there needed to be more cowbell and someone grabbed my her camera and took a pic. The band really was playing; I she wasn’t just standing by the fire beating the hell out of the poor cowbell. Honest!

So that was New Year’s Eve. At midnight there wasn’t really a toast. Everyone had been invited to write on a piece of paper whatever you wanted to leave in the past and at midnight we threw the slips of paper into the fire.

We spent the day at my mom’s house, with my brother, s-i-l, nephew and his girlfriend. Libby the Wonder Poodle joined us.

All would have been great except that my mom, brother, s-i-l, nephew and nephew GF all smoke like chimneys and they didn’t go outside. So even though they went into one of the bedrooms (the one with the TV) and smoked in there I still ended up with a mighty cigarette-smoke migraine.

I think I’m done for the day. Hope you all had a wonderful kick-off to a better year.

A paradox wrapped in an enigma playing the accordion. I'm a sinner-saint, child of God working at the cross-roads of church and world. A Deaconess called to connect people living near the center with people on the edge and to help your life sing (literally and figuratively) while doing it. People don't always get the deaconess part. Could be the swearing, the corporate job, or the wine.

  1. More cowbell!
Your party looks like so much fun :-) I couldn’t help noticing the kilted fellow…I seem to recall a certain weakness…
    Happy 2009!

  2. That was great! You, I mean, she looks so cute with the cowbell. Happy New Year!

  3. Next year, come to our house. We’ll play Rock Band and show our true dork colors.

    Happy New Year, NFH!
