September dinner at Chez Journey

It was a full day. What with singing with the choir at the early service, then racing home to finish preparations. Having another come to jebus meeting with the boys about pitching in. Working hard with them for an hour and getting it all done (SEE! I told you I wasn’t asking for too much!!) [...]

It’s all about the vibes, man!

Apparently there’s new research that seems to indicate that nerves do not transmit electrical impulses (which should generate some heat but can’t be proved to do so) but may instead transmit sound. The article focuses more on how anesthetics work but reading between the lines I think there are some interesting questions for musicians (and [...]

What a weekend

I tried 5 times to get a James Brown clip on here, but something’s not working… oh well. You’ll just have to imagine James singing while you skim through…

Saturday was a day of extremes. Started with playing a much shortened set for the Johnson Street merchants contribution [...]

energy crisis

Every Wednesday about this time I wonder if I’ll make it through the next 5 hours of rehearsals. Today is really doubtful. I can barely keep my eyes open and my body upright. I want to curl up under my desk and nap. The greyness of the beautiful spring rain seeps into my bones and [...]

Did it!

Finished by deadline! 5 course modules. There are two more for next week’s sessions, but I have until Monday to finish those.
The Gerhardt conference was good today. It was especially good for me to be there.
Not only to see my friends; although that was very good.
Not only to learn a little bit, not the least [...]

Running in circles is the same as Pirouetting, right?

Today is my long day. I’ll be at church earlier than usual for a Wednesday to try to finish planning repertoire for the spring. It’s been an unusually tough task this time and I’m not quite sure why. But I’m up against the deadline now, so decisions must be made.
Then back-to-back rehearsals begin at 4:00 [...]

Monday-Wednesday

Don’t know why exactly, but today is feeling like a Monday. And not in a good way.
I think it’s got to do with the overblown controversy I started by asking the 4th-6th grade choir kids to leave Sunday School early once so they could be ready to sing at the later service.
You’d think I’d asked [...]

Blanketed

Yesterday was unbelievable.
I almost said “indescribable” but I’m going to try to describe it so…
Yesterday morning began as Sundays usually do for me. At church around 7:45. Warm-up with the band (2nd Sunday…) and practice the psalm. This week, instead of drinking coffee and chatting with members between services, I ran a quick errand to [...]

Lots happening today

Water is on the boil for the first batch of noodles. I think I’ll run out between services to get plates and napkins (which I forgot yesterday when I ran to Target for dog food. Doh!)
I’ll have a couple of hours between the morning services and being back for at 3:30 for the Vespers service [...]

The only thing left to do

You probably think I’m crazy. Well, actually, if you’re reading this, you probably know me and know I’m crazy but not for this reason.
I’m not sure how many people reach the level of stress I’m at these days. The only thing that seems to help is prayer and either the kind of prayer where I [...]
